MOP VIDEO: Episode 712: "Carnal Knowledge"

  1. Hi Ladies! Thank you for explaining "Powly" vs "Pay-OH-lee". The "mispronounciation" virtually spoiled the episode for me, kept sputtering "do you folks even know where Paoli IS?? FWIW, I grew up in Strafford, went to Conestoga HS. You? (One of my aunts lived in Paoli, out in the woods on the south side of Lancaster Pike. Her husband had a real estate office in town.)

    1. Hi Susan, I'm glad you dropped by here from TheLitForum! I've known Carol and Tracey, who run this site, for years. They're always entertaining and frequently hilarious! I think it's very cool that Paoli is getting its 15 minutes of OUTLANDER fame as a result of this episode!

    2. AHHHH! You went to Conestoga?!? We went to Carroll even thought we lived 5 minutes up the road from Conestoga! That one hour bus ride was a real pain in the you know where!! Don't know if you want to name names, but wondering who the realtor was? :) There were SO MANY MIXED EMOTIONS when I heard "POWLEY!" LOL! I tried to be understanding that we have actually been saying the Americanized version all these years. At any rate, we were thrilled. We had no idea if Remember Paoli would even be mentioned, let alone carry a storyline! What an exciting week!

    4. Karen Henry directed me to you guys from Litforum. (Thanx, Karen.)
My uncle (by marriage) who had a RE office in Paoli was Russell J. Bailey. Aunt Marion did some interior decorating, was a painter & kept a couple of horses. Their kids went to Agnes Irwin.
I'm not convinced that locals necessarily pronounced Paoli "Powley" in the 18th C. For 1 thing, there weren't any significant # of Italians in the area prior to the late 19th/early 20th C who would have known the Italian pronunciaton & maintained it in daily use, nor what the local English, Welsh & Germans would have made of it. It's not clear why Joshua Evans chose to name his establishment the Paoli Tavern after an Italian patriot, or what the connection was there. I think it remains moot, frankly & that it would have made more sense to stick with current useage. My sister didn't even know they were talking about Paoli!!
I think 1 of you is in NJ. Is the other still in Chester Co? I have a meeting in Phila in Feb; if I drive down from my home in VT I hope to get out that way.

    5. We are both in New Jersey now. I have some friends in Paoli so I go back every once in a while. I really miss the area. Authentic stone homes that are hundreds of years old. You feel like you ARE in the 18th century sometimes. I was hoping I'd know your uncle! One of my friends from grade school went to Agnes Irwin. Here is something amusing: My daughter has me watching a show with her; Pretty Little Liars. Kindof a silly-yet-entertaining teen-ish show that ended about 10 years ago that's set in Rosemont...so I'm getting my Main Line fix that way these days!

  3. I know Paoli well having grown up between West Chester & Chadds Ford, PA.(Especially the Train Station into Philly). I love the History of our area of the Country, especially the Brandywine Battle Field & Valley Forge where I spent many hours painting, picnicking & as Teens, just hanging out. Ironically, I now live in Saratoga Springs, NY, near the Battlefields here and thru its History makes me feel distantly and continually connected to Philadelphia. I never knew the details of the Paoli Massacre until I just heard it on Outlander :) Peace.

    1. Oh you are home grown like we are!! Welcome! Your memories of Valley Forge sound like my own. I won't get too detailed about some of the dumber things I did there as a teen. LOL

Can you believe you learned about a major Revolutionary War battle - that happened in your own back yard - from OUTLANDER?? Crazy right??

You sound like me; I now live in Monmouth county in NJ; another battlefield...and my little town has its own Revolutionary War history that actually involves the Fraser's Highlanders and I will once again be waxing on about that eventually on this blog. LOL

  4. William gives his gorget in payment for Jane. I’m not sure that he can actually give that away? It seems hard to replace? Hmmm? Anyway , love William and here’s definition of the gorget :
A gorget is a special piece of armor that protects a soldier's neck.
Gorgets were worn about the neck by on-duty officers during the Revolutionary War. From a distance their crescent shape was recognized as a symbol of rank, and close-up their engraved decoration often testified to their owner's regimental affiliation.
