"Pissing on the Gateposts"

By the way... isn't it completely bizarre when Jamie does odd, 18th century spiritual things? Like... he's this big, strong, hulking man... and he can fight any warrior who comes down the pike... but make him go near one dead body in a shed... and he starts performing rituals to keep out the spirits. It seems so ironic, maybe? I dunno.... I just had to mention that.

  1. I think that's what makes Jamie seem so real. Gabaldon has created so many facets to his personality.

PS Carol, There are a couple of picture at my web site of what Jamie Fraser could look like. Click on my name to see. If the page has moved its pg 188.

  2. I am a Gabaldon fan, but I actually stumbled upon this blog, while trying to get details on the gate posts superstition. I knew it sounded familiar, does anyone remember the particulars? I am working on a close reading essay for a poem by the name "Gate Posts".

  3. Hi Anonymous,

In The Fiery Cross, Jamie "pisses on the gateposts" - as well as a door to a shed where a dead woman's body is being held - so as to ward off the spirit from following them back to the house after they leave the shed.

My (Irish American) mother makes me go out the same door I came in... but so far she's never made me do anything like that.) ;)

    Hope that helps!

PS - Diane - did I ever tell you I went to the site and checked out your HAWT picture of Gerard in the kilt? Holy cow. PS - Love the Jeffrey Dean Morgan site, too! Is that yours as well?
