Let me tell ya Sassenachs...one of the coolest places in the US is Dunedin, Florida. It is Scottish Heaven! The streets have names like Grant and Highland Ave...and the Scottish heritage abounds all over town. For example, if you go to a restaurant called Bon Appetit, which is on the gulf, you will hear the pianist play "Scotland the Brave" directly at sunset. Seriously. I may move here.

I had an employee a few years ago who grew up in Dunedin. She played in a bagpipe group in high school! I think you'd fit right in.
ReplyDeleteI went to university in Dunedin, New Zealand - its known as the Edinburgh of the south, and also has some interesting names - Stuart street, Cumberland Street, Hanover St, Dundas St, Duncan St etc. Great Place!
ReplyDeleteMy maternal great-grandmother, whose mother was from Scotland, was born in Dunedin, New Zealand.....the Scots part of NZ.

Molly - Yes! My aunt told me that! She said the high school band wears kilts! I loved it there. I would buy there in a heartbeat. I think we might have to arrange a gathering in Dunedin at some point. Stay tuned. ;)
ReplyDeleteI live about 1 hour south of Dunedin and was just up there two weeks ago for the Dunedin Highland Games. Lurve that town! They have awesome street parties and festivals for holidays and such (huge one for St. Patty's Day, as you could imagine). They even had bagpipers come out and play for their big Cinco de Mayo block party a few years back :-) Wrong nationality, of course, bug awesome nonetheless.
ReplyDeleteOh My Gosh Sara, You must come to our Scottish Book Club Meeting in Tampa. My own little book club picked up the series--at my insistence--last summer, and we now have several leadies hooked.
ReplyDeleteI also attended the Dunedin Highland Games and thoroughly enjoyed it. we drank Scottish Beer, danced a few jigs with the sounds of rockin' bagpipes and we all took home kilts. My husband purchased two. He's a bonnie Tall Irish Lad with ruddy hair and a nice arse. He actually looks a lot like our Jamie--at least to me.
While I was there, i was shopping for a Fraser tartan and came across a verra nice lassie who asked if I was a Fraser, too. I replied, "Of course!" I told her she must read Outlander, and then I went on and on about how the book would change her life all while my bonnie husband was rolling his eyes.
While on the subject of Tampa, if yall think that cute little race car driver is Jamie Fraser, well check out Tampa Bay Lightening hunk #6 Ryan Malone. He is 6' 4", red headed, big and beautiful. My God, I know he is not Scottish, but he just looks and acts like a warrior.
Mmmmm, Mmmmm, Mmmmm
Anyway, Carol, if you and Tracey or any of you other Lassies make it down this way wed love to have you.. We have the Scotch, the kilts, the festival, and the red headed men!
