My little girl (whose name is Verra-and is almost six years old-I didn't start reading the books until a year ago) is competing in the Highland Dance at our Highland games this year. My mother (who's name is Janet) has a cousin who is a world record setter for some of the highland games. I also happen to have a brother who's name is Jamie, although he does not have red hair, of which I am verra glad. We are Campbell's. My great grandmother came here from Scotland. Why did she have to do that? :) My grandma sounds mostly American when she talks, but when she gets mad-it's the Scots! lol
We are actually leaving on a Highland adventure of our own this morning! We have 3 weeks in England, Scotland and Wales, including a week cruising Loch Ness! I am sorry that we will just miss these Games, as well as the anniversary of Culloden, which is just a couple of days before we arrive. Oh well, can`t complain!
FYI -- I will posting another recipe from Outlander (actually from DOA) on our trip. I hope some of you check it out...Theresa
Carol, do you remember when I emailed you about the song "Dimming of the Day" last summer and how it made me think of Jamie and Claire and the Ridge? Well, Alison Kraus & Union Station have covered it on their new album, and it is haunting and beautiful. You should DEFINITELY check it out!
And while I'm talking music, "Finlandia", by Troy Donockley, just played on my Pandora station, and I melted into a puddle right here in Starbucks. The bagpipes! The bagpipes are awesome!
Here's a sample (and be warned: the volume is really loud for some reason): http://www.pandora.com/music/song/troy+donockley/finlandia
If you can't make it to scotland, come to the NH Highland Games!! www.NHScot.org It's beautiful here in the Mount Washington Valley and a lovely setting for the Highland Games each year.
Najama- I keep looking for my Scottish heritage.Haha. It has got to be somewhere in my line! I can't believe you have a brother Jamie, and Janet is your mother's name!! Don't even get me started on Campbell! How fun! I noticed you are from Utah. Are you going to Thanksgiving Point for the Scottish Festival? I went last year for the first time! It was amazing!! I keep asking my husband if he wants to get into the Highland games,(so I can get him into a kilt) and I've seriously considered making my boys learn how to play the bagpipes. Can you tell I'm desperate to have some kind of connection to all things Scottish! ;-) This is the effect Outlander has had on me. Crazy! And I'm jealous of the rest of you jet setting off to the UK. I want to hear all about it;-)
I am SO IN! Which one of you is buying my ticket? hahaha
ReplyDeleteI have been to the Inverness Highlands Games. It was pretty cool.
