Hello!
ReplyDeleteI am new to the blog, and I have been watching and loving the videos!
I live on the west coast and will, unfortunately, be working this evening during the chat, so I just wanted to mention a scene that impresses me each time I read it... it's a mere 2 pages (sorry, but Jamie is not present!), and yet the scene brings together so much of what defines Diana's brilliant writing. If anyone has a comment on this scene, I would love to hear it: Pages 750 + 751 in Echo (hardcover edition)- Lord John's observations (his "point of view") about Claire's preparations to perform surgery on Henry. The scene does set a certain tone re. LJ's feelings/admiration for Claire, but it is also a masterful description of a 20th C meets 18th C operation. Bravo, once again, Diana!

Welcome MarthaB! Don't have Echo with me at the moment (I'm at work as well), but vaguely remember that scene and agree with you--some definite foreshadowing going on there.
ReplyDeleteI'm right in the middle of a Drums reread, and I also got a LOT out of rereading the conversation Claire/LJ had while he was recovering from the measles. I would say it's pretty key to go back to that scene and take another look at it after reading, um, certain parts of Echo. ;-) Definite insight into that relationship from both sides!
Hello again as I leave for work!
ReplyDeleteI have been listening to the novels on my iPod while walking to work and jogging.
I am so verra impressed with the detail that stands out in the audio. I do have my "take" on Davina, as do most people, I think, (although she is a gem, a true interpeter + I have also listened to Geraldine James who has a "younger" voice), but I have got so much more detail than I even got in my many re-reads... then the "detail count" is so huge anyway that I fully understand why people are so passionate and committed to the books + to Diana.
I recall a comment on the Ladies of Lallybroch site where someone said, as Diana was writing one of the books, that she should be kept wrapped in bubble wrap to protect her!
Have a good chat tonight and looking forward to your next video!

MarthaB - I've always thought that one of the reasons LJ comes to like Claire as much as he does for the person she is and not just because she is Jamie's wife is because she isn't really a 18th century female - she actually has more traditionally masculine traits, imo... It stands to reason that LJ finds her 'attractive', no?
ReplyDeleteAt work (hehehehe). Yes, with that scene, because LJ clearly sees Claire as a "warrior", he is finally coming to the root of who/what Claire is and why Jamie/Claire is what it is. There is so much "awe" in his POV!

I don't mean to be dirty...but what exactly is going on in that picture...? ;)
ReplyDeleteWhile I am not as enamored of the picture as you lasses are (I still want to know how you got a hold of a picture of me and my crew in the loo....lol). I wanted to let you and Carol know about a song called-- Cold Glencoe by the group Rise. It is about the Glencoe Massacre where members of Clan Campbell killed members of Clan MacDonald.
ReplyDelete--Richard
Ooooh thanks Richard. I'll look it up. And I'm so happy to see you commenting!
