Monarch of the Glen...Again

SPOILER ALERT:  Do not read unless you have watched Season 6, Episode 3.

Um...Lexie AND Duncan are gone?!  Are you KIDDING me?!?  Who the heck is left?  Let's see...Molly...Golly...and that's about it from the original cast.  I like Jess...and Hector's brother Donald has grown on me to the point where I find him mildly amusing.  I also really like Ewan...and Paul.  So they are keeping me going...but wow...it's weird.

And here's the thing.  I am really unhappy with Lexie's decision to go to New Zealand.  Archie took off and left her for months to go "find himself"...and she LOVES Glenbogle.  That place is more hers than Archie's at this point.  I TOTALLY wanted her to stay, divorce Archie, marry Paul and run the place.  It was SO true when Paul told her going to New Zealand was Archie's dream; not hers.  And she went anyway.  And why? Because Donald dug Molly five million years ago?  I'm sorry, that is NOT a good enough reason to pack up and move to New Zealand when you don't even want to be there.  Archie's a selfish douche.  Plain and simple.

And Duncan.  HELLO?  I keep hoping one of them will be back...but I doubt it.  I miss his kilt already...and he's only been gone half an episode.  WHAT a bummer.

  1. Did you get a chance to watch the Hogmanay episode? Because Archie making the decision to definitely not return to Glenbogle (and the show!) come out in that episode.

I agree about how sad for Lexie and Duncan to leave; especially Duncan. But Lexie was becoming a 3rd wheel (or is it a 5th wheel?) - she really had no place on the show any longer (since she and Paul chose not to get together) - Ewan has replaced her in the kitchen.

Speaking of Ewan - I do like him; he's funny (not as funny as Duncan, mind you, but he makes me laugh) but how on earth can he be a cook - honestly he looks about 18 or 19! I still haven't quite figured out how old he is. And you know what else doesn't make sense - Duncan and Jess. She just seems out of his league somehow; I would expect him with someone more like himself...sort of goofy and not very sophisticated. That coupling just doesn't work for me.

You're right about Archie being selfish - the relationship between him and Lexie never felt real to me anyway. I still miss the both of them though. :(

  3. Carol, we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. I am happy that Lexie decided to go back to Archie. Now, don't get me wrong here, I still don't get why they're together at all (she really does have chemistry with Paul, I'll give you that), but they ARE married. I liked Molly's advice to her about marriages going through phases. So true!

You know, if you think about it, Archie has always kind of been like this. Lexie married him with this personality, so she really shouldn't be so surprised. I do hope that they get some marriage counseling, and hopefully we'll get some happy updates about them via Molly.

I see the show angling to get Paul and Isabella (is that her name??) together. Though they made me think there was a future for Archie and Katrina way back when, so what do I know?? lol

  6. The show isn't the same without Duncan! The show was different and fun because of the quirky characters and now they are all leaving. :(

  7. OK.. so I just watched Season 6 Ep 3 last night. I was really debating whether or not I wanted to continue with the series after Season 5. I thought the writers were really struggling with episode ideas. If I were one of the actors.. I would have quit as well. Not that I turn to this show for anything insightful or thought-provoking.. but the situations they were in were beyond ridiculous even for that group.

  8. I just adored the show the first few seasons which I watched in just a couple of weeks thanks to Netflix streaming. But I just lost interest because of all the cast changes and directions the storyline took. It got so ridiculous I didn't even care anymore. There were clearly some behind the scenes issues that affected the show. That's too bad because it started out so good.

  9. When I saw the title of your blog, I knew I had a kindred spirit! Why is Outlander taking soooo long? I found Monarch on Netflix as a bandaid, I hope I can hold out....

    1. And I'm now in Glen Bogle withdrawal! Have to watch again! :) I'm hearing rumblings of some chapters of MOBY being released early. CROSS YOUR FINGERS!

  10. I agree that Archie and Lexie never seemed like a "real" couple - They always felt chemistry-less to me. I thought the writers should have brought Paul in much earlier, because I disliked Archie "settling" for being laird. He should have paired with Katrina, imho, and gone with her to the city where he wanted to be. Paul was a perfect match for Lexie, who was my favorite character. It just was so crazy that she would have married a man who didn't share her love for Glenbogle, and then left it when she loved it so much and all her dreams were realized there. She was always the insightful one, working out problems between the people and the estate, making things run smoothly and catching the troublemakers. When she left the show I lost all interest. The only thing left for them to butcher was Golly's and Molly's fragile relationship, and they did a pretty good job screwing up that with Meg

  11. Never heard of Monarch of the Glen till I found it on Netflix. Loved the entire show and the characters. Hector was adorable and colorful and really missed him when he left. I thought it was selfish of Alastair to leave the show which totally changed the storyline. Didn't think Archie should have married Lexie they had nothing in common. After the way she kept throwing herself at the Laird she then decides she prefers his brother! And Duncan with his flying kilt leaving the show ugh. Every character in that show was essential. Great cast. Even the ones that came later like Paul, Donald and Ewan they all sort of grew on you. Am watching it again can't help it...

  12. Lexie is exhausting. She can't just be happy. She makes drama...so irritating. Katrina..even worse. No integrity coming back to Glenbogle trying to get her hands on Archie, and thinking she was more reliable than Lexie..girl, you left so losers weepers! Lexie has always been there for Archie, and I think he needs/deserves that!

  13. We just finished watching the final episode of Monarch of the Glen tonight. Any suggestions of something comparable to take it’s place?

    1. Sadly, no. 😔 The closest thing you'll find to a massive estate in financial trouble in the UK - that I know of - is Downton Abbey. One show I liked a lot that's nothing like Monarch but a lot of fun is Last Tango in Halifax. Let me know if you find anything else!

    2. Hi! Funny, I'm watching the show right now and keep thinking of how the VIBE (not season 6, but the first seasons) remind me a bit of "NORTHERN EXPOSURE"! If you haven't seen it, it's a great show! I know I'm 1 year late with a response, but - check it out! It's a fun show and "feel-goody"! So there's my recommendation for you! Cheers from Salt Lake City, Utah (USA) - Becky
