Outlander 2016 Golden Globe Nominations: MOP Breaks it DOWN!

  1. Always fun to watch your videos! Esp now I know how to watch via streaming on my TV. Watched this last night and my sympathies are with you Carol. Need sumthin' stronger than a Bud to forget my disappointment for our Sam though. The Gaelic dialogue scene alone (the one with Murtagh in EP 16) should have been enough for a GG nom IMO. And that guy from Better Call Saul gets one? Ugh, makes me seriously doubt the integrity of the voting body here. Still, VERY pleased for the noms our show DID receive.

  2. Thanks for the video ladies. I think I'm ready to get back in the Outlander saddle again. I was thinking last night after watching your video what you thought about Sam's "sex symbol" status maybe effecting his nomination. He has gotten a lot of press and attention in that area and may have caused the HFP to view him less seriously. Thoughts?

    Keep up the good work,
    Kim

    1. OMG KIM - I wondered the EXACT SAME THING!!! All this hoopla and swooning over Sam... Is it doing damage??? YIKES! Most people mean well...but...eeek...I don't know...

  3. Sam is so much more than an ass and a set of pecs. I'm pretty mad at Ron Moore right now for what he did in diminishing Jamie's role in the run-up to Eps. 15 1nd 16. Did you see the deleted scenes from Ep 9 (the one that was supposed to have been told from Jamie's perspective): - the one with Murtagh in the kitchen AND (especially) the one with Colum where he all but threatens Claire to Jamie's face?? Sam is fabulous in those scenes; and dickweed RDM leaves them out in favor of having Jamie cop a feel of Leery's boobs. Vomiting .....

    1. Yes, agree, and certain persons connected with the show maintain that they aren't caving in to typical Hollywood sexism in order to draw viewers. Bah! Let it stop there, please! The story doesn't need it, book or onscreen IMO.

  4. The notorious use of "Hunky" when describing Sam in his role has damaged him and it is not fair. It is a creation of the media and probably the fandom world. Sam is a marvelous actor and doesn't need awards to motivate him. He is a professional.

    1. I wondered the same thing. I don't think it helps that he (or the character he portrays) is given the title "King of Men", not that the title isn't deserved. It takes the focus away from the acting and I have to wonder if those doing the judging get caught up in that and failed to see beyond the objectification that Sam has received.

  5. I am not one to post much on this group, but I feel compelled to write something about the snub that Sam Heughan received this year at The Golden Globes nominations. I had never read the Outlander books, but through various friends on Facebook, would see the letters JAMMF and wonder what the hell they were all about. I had also heard the name Diana Gabaldon, but didn’t give it a second thought. Then one day, I was watching Showcase Channel in Canada and I heard a voice say the famous wedding episode words, “It’s as though I walked in from a cloudy day and suddenly the sun came out.” I was intrigued and with the scene of the dress, the Scottish tartans and a lovely young man, I decided to give Outlander a go!
I am here to say that I think Sam Heughan is one of the bravest, most honest actors I have ever witnessed in my life. I have viewed thousands of hours of televison and movies, and when I reached the end of To Ransom a Man’s Soul, I was utterly gutted, blown away, annihilated and transcended by Sam’s depiction of the torture, destruction and raping of Jamie Fraser. I have never seen an actor go to such lengths with portraying the madness, soul-crushing degradation of a human being with such raw integrity. From the first episode of the series to the last of Season 1, the character of Jamie has been given blood, bone, marrow and sinew with Sam’s skill. Nervous bride groom, powerful warrior, humiliated clansman, to the manor-born Laird, fierce outlaw, passionate lover, devoted husband, hilarious drunkard, all have been in Sam’s boundless wheelhouse as an actor and a man.
To see this man carry himself with such wickedly good humour, grace and kindness, to witness his charitable pursuits, graciousness towards all his fellow cast and crew, and see his gentle self-effacement at his natural beauty and charisma is a privilege and pleasure to behold. I can honestly say that I love Sam Heughan. Not in the “I want him as my boyfriend” way, but in the way one is absolutely delighted by the fact that he is on this planet, setting my screen ablaze with his talent and warming the souls of those around him. All beautiful, loving and kind wishes go out to him. Sam, your name is known in many corridors now, the world has taken you into its heart and even though a collection of journalists didn’t see fit to reward you with the possibility this year to receive their shiny piece of gold, know that you are a rare breed, a true dragonfly in amber and a diamond geezer to us all. Teary-eyed and awestruck fan for life, I wish you success and joy always.

  6. So glad you guys made a video about this! Yes, I am both disapointed and sad that Sam didn't get a nomination, but at the same time I understand what you're saying Tracy!
Carol! I'm so happy that you mentioned The Last Kingdom. I've watched all the episodes and it definitely makes this Droughtlander a little bit easier to go through!
Can't wait for your next video, which I presume will be after the Golden Globes?

  7. Thank you Tracy and Carol for the video. It was good hear and read from other Outlander fans. Very excited about the GG nominations but I do definitely agree with Carol ....Sam not being nominated is simply not right. I was a fan of the show before reading the books and Sam brought Jamie to life for me. Totally agree with your tribute Nancy H.

  8. Finally watched the video (so great to see you both!) but had to build myself up to it...still so very, very disappointed about Sam. Carol, thanks for sharing so honestly your gut feelings about it - agree with you totally, no matter the rationale is for it all, I'm still both sad and pissed that Sam was overlooked, whatever the reasons. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth (probably like your Bud Light did, lol!)

Merry Christmas to you both ;)

  9. Someone on another site shared this link, an interesting article with a different take on Sam's portrayal - one I have to say I agree very much with! http://www.likesbooks.com/blog/?p=18057
