This was a pretty sweet episode. JAMMF was back! -Might have cut a few of the first 15 minutes of Claire’s wandering for a bit more Jamie on the back end. But the casting (of the priest and mother in law) was fantastic as usual. And the Fergus naming and Turtle Soup scene satisfied this fan!
Oh Carole, I'm so sorry Tom is sick! I'm only 3 minutes into the video, but had to pause it and tell you that your family is in my prayers! Cancer messed with the wrong family. I know he will kick cancer's ass in the end. (((Hugs)))
I thought maybe originally you both were wearing sunglasses because this was a beach/Island episode! 🙂
Coco WAS the name of the coconut. But I thought of Wilson too! 😃
My favorite episode so far. It felt like essence of the book ... I also like it was really one continuous story and not jumping all over the place. I like how it went back to Claire’s point of view or story. I think not knowing what going on in other places is more realistic as each of us have no clue about what’s happening in other people’s lives until we hear or find out later.
In the producers recap, they mentioned why they used goats instead of sheep which I took no notice of while watching. Mainly, it was because there were more goats on the island instead of sheep. But preaching to a bunch of goats is as funny as a bunch of sheep!
I cried when Claire’s sailor friend died in the last episode. I also got teary when Jamie gave Fergus his surname. So touching.
I will keep Tom and your family in prayer, Carol. I went through a lot with my husband. So, I with you girl.
Yes 15 minutes of Claire in the jungle was a bit much! That said, the adaptation of the story for this episode, like the others since the print shop burned, was 'spot on'. Of course the plot lines were simplified for the medium but they managed to do so without completely changing any of the characters into someone unrecognizable from the books. I gave a lot of thought to how Jamie reacted to Claire's kidnapping, and while the scene did seem out of character for him, in the books he goes overboard and SWIMS to Claire without a plan to get back. Book fans know this experience teaches Claire that it is not her job to carry out a dangerous escape, but to be safe and survive until Jamie rescues her. I guess this was a compact way of telling us that JAMMF will move heaven and earth to save Claire and combine scenes from the book, but it wasn't as clean as some of the other adaptations. Loved the recap. I really appreciate all the time you give to this venture and definitely agree that some of the comments seems to come from a PR office... If this was a political sight I would think you had a Russian troll! Go away, comrade!
You guys, tundra is frozen Earth like in the Arctic! And on what planet are Fergus and Marsali as hot as J & C? Fergus is still kind of built like a kid. He's cute, but I do NOT want to see Fergus sex. He was 12 last season.
LOL so funny, I know. Tundra is so not right. I think I got it wrong as a kid in science class and it just stuck! As for Fergus and Marsali, just curious...have you read the books? :)
I've read through DOA, plus Scottish Prisoner. I know the story will move away from Jamie and Claire and towards Fersali and Roger/ Bree (Boger? Rree? Lol. I'm working on it), but I wish they weren't. Don't get me wrong, I love all the characters, but J & C have my heart.
LOLOL Boger and Rree...OMG we should so do a contest to come up with the best name! 😂 Breeger? LOL! I am DYING to say things...but I will hold back. Put it this way...yes, yes, yes, J&C come first. ALWAYS. But after them? There's room for a wholeeeee lotta fun with the rest of the crew. Wheeee! :)
I'm feeling like Wee Ian might be a favorite character in future books. I can totally see how I will love him in the future. I appreciate you not spoiling things for me though! And yes! Do a contest! Broger?? OMG! I don't know. Lol. Thanks for having such a great, funny, real, podcast! ❤️ You guys!
Hey you two! Fantastic recap, thank you sooo much for persevering through weariness and illness. God bless you! Prayers for Tom. You've rekindled this book reader's interest in the show, and i will watch it sometime! Hugs all around. Love from Lynn in Alberta!
What I dig the most about your insights is that i get 99%of your obscure references. Samantha Baker quotes I laughed my ass off. But when you showed Peter Brady and the tarantula.......priceless. I wasn't going to skip around on your reviews so that i could watch them in order (aka Tracey rules) but I had to hear your thoughts on this episode. I am not looking forward to droughtlander AT ALL. Maybe I will read the books? Nah. Rather watch you guys. Thanks again for insights.
OMG Donna...I JUST said "Do you want to go to the dance with Sam?" TODAY! In every day life! I have a serious problems. My entire world is made up of 80s quotes! LOL! :)
I also want to send my thanks to you both for persevering through such a difficult holiday to do the video! Carol, I wish the MOP fan group could come to your house and put on the Thanksgiving feast that you weren't able to have (I make great Irish scones so I'll bring those!). We'll need some coconut cream pie as well to honor Coco!
I also really liked the episode and all the humor, especially the scene in the wedding where the priest was confused about who the groom was. Also the look that Mamacita gave Claire when she saw the zipper in her outfit (like she was thinking "should I wash this on the delicate cycle?").
Just finished Dragonfly in Amber so now I can go on to Voyager - yay!
So glad you both got some happy yukks from doing this recap. (and I agree: enough with the yukky yukks!) Tell Tom he needs to work on his "Father Foghorn" impression for his next Deep Thoughts contribution. So sorry he is feeling worse that 10 droughtlanders.
You guys are so funny! Sorry Tracey but Carol wins the coolest glasses contest. I loved this episode also. Fergus is a cutie, and doesn't Marsali get pregnant right away in the book? I wonder if they will do that in the show. So sorry for what Tom is going through sending positive vibes that he will be feeling better soon. The cancer is shitty AF.
Seriously, Claire, eat that snake!! He would have fed you for days!!! You have fire, you can cook it!! I've heard snake is pretty good... :) Loves to Tom and Carol, keep it up, you're doing awesome!!!💕
I have never left a comment but have enjoyed your videos for years. I'm a long time book reader and your synopsis has become part of my ritual. Just want to say you are both beautiful inside and out. These are the times families get through things together and a great example of that. Agree with your review and laughed along with you. Thanks for your posts and best to your families.
BANG!! That was the sound of my butt jumping back on the Outlander bandwagon! 😁 Of course I'd never stop watching, but have to say this episode was sooo satisfying. My appreciation for the 2 of you also...what can I say! It proves what I've always thought, any great story be it a book or movie has the power to transport. Escapism at its best. Our problems and challenges are still there when we close the book or get to the credits, but you're renewed. Hang in there ladies.
Comments on episode:
First of all how hilarious are you two, "this is going to be a short recap..." 1:13!! So funny, not complaining at all, but funny!
Tracey, would I LOVE to hear the in-laws take on the series, it would be an interesting perspective 🤔
Maybe it took Claire longer to find the settlement because she was walking in circles, easy to do when exhausted and lost, sleep and food deprived. Maybe thats why she was quicker to get back to the beach, Mamasita also pointed the way?
I know I'm probably in the minority here, but I LOVE the medical stuff, it's a huge part of why I love the books, maybe in another life I'd have been a nurse if not a doctor.
Did anyone else miss the crazy biologist? Can't remember alot about him but know he pops back into the story later.
I have 6 kids, pretty close in age, 5 boys 1 girl. Unfortunately I'm well acquainted with ER's, stitches and have had one ambulance ride, you're right strangely exciting as well as terrifying.
One year our oldest had e-coli when he was about 8. We spent one of the worst weeks of my life in isolation, hiding from everyone that I was quite pregnant with #6. My husband and I actually spent our 15th anniversary eating in the hospital cafeteria. That's what the Doritos pic reminded me of. Happy you can laugh about it already. We have a strapping 25 year old now, and your family will be intact at the end of this too.
Thanks for all you do Tracey and Carol, see you next week.
Dear Carol. I found your blog while recovering from cancer surgery in 2014. Your humor really made a difference for me. Hang in there. It will get better.
OMG Sharen, that makes my day that MOP was able to give you some comfort. I've now seen cancer up close so I know that you are a BADASS for fighting that fight. 😘
I saw a video of Caitriona Balfe holding the actual snake (she says she loves snakes!) The snake's name is Scar (after some character from the Lion King (?) and she's just holding the thing and it's writhing around in her arms. And yes, it really did crawl over her in the show for realz. Anypoodles, love to you both and healthy wishes for Tom to get better and get home as fast as possible.
So thankful for you both and am in awe of your commitment to your fans despite illness and travel. Sending prayers and hugs to Tom. You two are the best and I appreciate your honest unfiltered opinions. I will miss you both during droughtlander.
1) Hope Tom is feeling better and will soon be home. 2) You both actually look very pretty without makeup. 3) On the official Outlander podcast, Maril said that the snake (named Scar) was real, that they "introduced" it to Cait beforehand, and she was fine with it. Maril also said the fire ants on her legs were not CGI but a mix of real ants and prosthetic ones. She said Cait insisted on doing it all. 4) In the book, turtle soup began with Claire giving Jamie some oral love when the person came knocking on the door. (Was it the cook?) She wouldn't stop and Jamie had to answer the man even though he was more than a little distracted, lol. 5) Great recap although you did leave out Father Fogden asking Fergus if he had a cock, lol! Hope you both get some sleep and wake up to a better day!
First off, I want to thank you both so much for taking the time to do this video during such a harried time in your life. I hope at the very least the laughing gave you some stress relief.
As s book reader, I also have hopes...and probably too high expectations...when it comes to wanting/expecting certain scenes and lines from the book to be in the show verbatim. But for the most part, I can understand the changes they have had to make. In this particular episode, the changes enhanced the whole experience IMO.
I am adoring what they have done with Yi Tien Cho/Willoughby. I am hoping that they have figured out a way to handle his storyline going forward than how it was in the book, because he has earned a dignified storyline.
Fersali are adorable.
Fr. Foggy was brilliantly cast, as was Mamacita. Thank goodness Stern was omitted because they didn't need TWO crazies in one episode.
Caitriona Balfe...I mean, BAM. I LOVED every bit of that jungle walk because no one can convey what is going on in Claire's head better than her, with no dialog. FYI, some of the ants were real, and they enhanced them with CGI per RDM. And the snake was real.
Glad to see that Jamie was back to being the Jamie we all love. He became Laird Broch Turaach again the moment he bestowed the Fraser name on Fergus.
And finally, I happily concede "berth biting" to "mirror sex" any day. Damn, that was hot.
Thanks again for an entertaining experience. You two are just wonderful...and a hoot to boot.
Yes definitely thanks to both your time and effort! Love your recaps and look forward to them. Love this episode but did miss the original story of how Claire hurt her arm but the change worked as well. Get some rest y'all!
Thanks to you both for powering through your exhaustion. No worries about the makeup. Hell, did you ever consider what those of us watching in our PJs look like? Think troll doll with a hang over.
I liked the episode too, very much. My only regret is that we won't be able to see one of DG's favorite scenes...the one where they've just been reunited and JAMMF is washing up and telling her all the things he'd do to her and the noises that she makes. I guess that will have to be left to the readers to enjoy. :0 )
Wishing Tom a speedy recovery and a great holiday for both of you with family.
Your recaps make my day. Thank-you for making it happen despite how tired and worried you must be. MOP Ladies are Tough A.F. lol! I missed Lawrence Stern, the botanist/biologist, too. Hope he shows up in the next episode. Maybe Jamie was so grouchy in the past episode because his blood sugar was low because he couldn't eat anything?? :) Oooh, a new ew Tom segment? "Tom Tough A.F Talks": And Gives JAMMF and "the cancer" a run for their money! Hope his recuperation goes well, and that you get lots of rest, Carol! Tracey...we need to hear how the play went!! Poldark...say no more, it's excellent. And, I went out there on the world wide web and found "Versailles", WOW, Carol, you're right, it's soooo good. Looking forward to next week's video! Take care of yourselves, too, you two.
😘 PS - OMG LOVE Stern. AND AND AND Poldark - be still my heart. One of the BEST shows on TV right now. And Versailles can be delicious. Also try The Last Kingdom on Netflix...and have you watched Victoria? I am a TV hooah! ;)
Hi Ladies! I love your recaps... I thought that the scenes of Claire in the rainforest went a little long. I agree with you that I was ok with most of the changes from the book. As Carol noted, there would be men of all races on ships in the Caribbean at that time. Also Tracey, I would take Mamacita using the tu form as an insult because it would be more respectful to use the usted form.
Right?? I think my deal with the rain forest and scenes like that is this: It's beautiful, well done, etc etc...but when so many other things have to be cut because there is so much to fit in, I'd be OK with shortening a rain forest scene in order to give another scene a few more minutes of dialogue, etc.
Carol and Tracey, thank you for all your efforts and humor in creating these recaps, I look forward to them as much as I do to the show itself. I admire you both for your commitment and dedication to creating your recaps even when facing adversity in your personal lives. I send peaceful, healing thoughts and prayers to you and your families.
I have one question about the "Uncharted" episode: what are your thoughts/comments on the goat's head scene when Fr. Fogden mentions the cave Abandawe, without too many spoilers for those who haven't read the books? Having read the books I've been curious to see how the show will deal with the scenes involved in that plot line and am looking forward to hearing your comments and views on those scenes if/when they are depicted.
Wishing you both a healthy and happy holiday season and New Year!
Hey Carol and Tracey, Love your recaps, they've become part of my routine, watch the episode, watch your recap then watch with the writer commentary.
As for any PR people, they should kiss the ground you two walk on. At the end of Season 1, you two talked me off the ledge. I felt like I never wanted to watch another episode again, but I figured if Carol and Tracey, as book lovers, were willing to give it another try, so was I. I can tell that you always strive to make any criticism of the show respectful and try to keep an open mind when viewing (with comments that crack me up).
I look forward to your personal updates at the beginning of your recap. Carol, keeping Tom and your family in my prayers, so glad he's doing better. Tracey, loved hearing about your Thanksgiving and want to hear about the play, too. I appreciate that you have some background in productions that helps you explain possible reasons for why Ron and Co. make changes to the show from the book. I'm enjoying this season the best and am not sure if it's because Voyager is one of my favorite books or that Matt and Toni, as book lovers, have the insight to make changes that sit better with the book lovers.
Looking forward to seeing next week's episode (so sad there's only 2 more left) and then seeing your recap. Thank you for all you do, you really make watching Outlander more fun and interesting for me.
Prayers for Tom and your family! Much Love!

ReplyDeleteI have one question about the "Uncharted" episode: what are your thoughts/comments on the goat's head scene when Fr.
Hey Carol and Tracey,
ReplyDeleteLove your recaps, they've become part of my routine, watch the episode, watch your recap then watch with the writer commentary.
